The university’s Meilong campus occupies an area of 740,000 square meters with a total constructed area of 600,000 square meters, including 6,870 square meters of indoor facilities and 35,447 square meters of outdoor facilites available for a wide range of athletic activities. The indoor facilities consists of two standard basketball courts, a multi-function gymnasium, a 50-meter indoor shooting range, and a table tennis building. Outdoor facilities include a field of standard track equipped with a 400-meter plastic runway and a natural turf football court, 10 outdoor standard basketball courts, 4 outdoor tennis courts, an artificial turf football court, and a swimming pool.
There are two fitness centers: the testing center and the training center. The training center provides diversified, custom and professional indoor and outdoor fitness practice and training services. The Center has special areas for strength training, dynamic cycling, fitness testing, table tennis and aerobic exercise; its members enjoy free physical testing, regular recreational activities, professional coaching and guidance, and priority uses of available sporting equipment and facilites.
Education
The Department is authorized to confer b achelor degrees in the athletes specialty of International Trade and master degrees in Humane Sociology of Sports. Its master degree program is the first such program in China for the study of sports economy and sports industry to produce high-level professionals for government agencies, colleges and universities, research institutions, sports clubs, sports and related industries for conducting research and analysis, policy consultation, management, training, teaching and scientific research in sports and physical education. Its research is focused on sports economy and sports industry management.
The graduate program has 3 professors, 2 associate professors and several instructors, many with advanced degrees in sports majors; they have are engaged in 14 scientific researching projects with external funding support totaling more than ¥5 million. Taking advantages of the university resources in science, technology and advanced materials and in cooperation with Research Institute of Sports and the Materials Institute, Research & Promotion Center of Sporting Materials was established in March 2005 to conduct R&D, testing and assessment of materials for sporting apparatus.
Research
“ECUST and Taishan” Advanced Sporting Materials R&D Center was established on the campus with a grant from Taishan Sports Industry Group. It is the first new sporting materials R&D center in China. Having already built a strong research team with 5 PhDs and several others holding master degrees and a world-class laboratory equipment, and with the commitment of additional financial support from Taishan Group, the Center is now fully functional with a positive outlook for steady and continuous growth in the future.
International exchange
As the base for Table Tennis Branch of Federation University Sports of China, ECUST has conducted its sports activities following the concept of “one class, one seminar, one match, one observation”. Eevery year the university conducts a class for teachers or referees, holds a seminar of sports related theme, sponsors the China University Table Tennis Championships, and organizes nationwide college physical education teachers and coaches to observe a grand match. Many outstanding athletes from the United States, Germany, France, Slovenia, Japan, South Korea and other countries have come to ECUST for learning and/or participation in various games.
sports ng the concept eir contribution to our various programs.of these internation acorts and In 2000, ECUST independently held the 13th World University Table Tennis Championships participated by nearly 300 athletes and coaches from 16 countries/regions; it was the first world grand game organized by a Chinese college/university. In 2002, the university proposed and then organized the first National University “President Cup” Table Tennis Tournament. Leaders from nearly 100 colleges/universities attended the event which has since received many highly favorable remarks from Ministry of Education and Federation University Sports and produced a good social impact. In 2004, the university hosted the table tennis competitions of the 7th China University Games; our facilities and services won the unanimous praise of the participating athletes and coaches. In 2006, our hospitality in holding the 2006 Modern Pentathlon World Junior Championship allowed the young athletes from around the world to compete in high spirits and to enjoy their short stay in Shanghai.before returning home safely.
The Department have been primarily responsible for the success of these and other international sports and exchange activites. Wes pay special attention to initiate and maintain contacts with the friends of international sports education and sports academia. A number of our members were invited to the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, New Zealand and other places to give lectures and to collaborate in a wide range of sports activites and research projects. We have hosted the visits of many well know scholars and athelets and also trained numerous international students. Such activities have enhanced our teaching and research programs and made us more popular and significant.
Several athletic celebrities have been appointed as visiting professors in recognition to their contribution to our various programs; among them are Zhang Xielin (former associate director of Chinese Table Tennis and Badminton Management Center, vice chairman of China Table Tennis Association, chief coach of Chinese Women Table Tennis Team) and Yu Runxing (vice chairman of Hong Kong Olympic Committee and president of Hong Kong Table Tennis Federation). |
