  The subject of Control Theory and Control Engineering of the East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, China, dated originally back to the major of chemical engineering automation founded firstly in China as its root , was one of the first-tier subjects with conferring authorization of PhD and MSc degrees approved by the State Council of China, and is currently the State and Shanghai municipal key subject. Presently this subject has the first-class PhD program in Control Science and Engineering and a mobile postdoctoral research program in Control Science and Engineering. Furthermore, the National Engineering Research Center (Shanghai) of Industrial Automation, Sino-British Joint Lab for Software and Information Systems Engineering, Sino-Japanese Joint Lab for Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems and other academic bases have been established under the umbrella of this subject. Also the international scientific journal titled “Cognitive Neurodynamics” (Springer-Verlag) was also organized and sponsored by this subject.
 
  Based on the chemical engineering background of the ECUST, this subject has dealt with the world cutting-edge R&D for many years towards the process-stream industry which plays a pivotal role in the national economic development and centers around the key open scientific and technical problems in the field of complex industrial and manufacturing process control and optimization. As a result, such advantageous, closely-related and mutually-supportive research directions as Industrial Process Modeling, Control & Optimization, Complex Systems Control Theory, Comprehensive Automation Theory and Applications in Process-Stream Industry, and Intelligent Information Processing and Intelligent Systems have been created. In this process, a body of world influential research achievements and patented technologies have been achieved, some of which are of national leading and international advanced status. Therefore, this subject has become a national leading and world-recognized discipline with strong research caliber and abilities in the field of petrochemical automation.
 
  This subject has one recipient of National Distinguished Young Expert Fund, one state-level candidate for “Hundreds and Thousands Talents Project in the New Century”, two professors with the honor of “State Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions”, three Shanghai Municipal Working Role-models, three Shanghai Municipal Scientific and Technological Elites and one New Century Talent of the State Education Ministry of China. In this subject there are 22 full professors, 18 of them were authorized to supervise PhD students and 9 PhD supervisors are at the age of around 40. Moreover, 19 associate professors are currently affiliated with this subject. The number of faculty members holding a PhD degree has reached more than 96 percent of all faculty members. Several research groups with active, energetic and collaborative academic and research staff and other salient features have been already formed.
 

  Over the past 5 years, A total of 266 key research and engineering projects, such as National Natural Science Foundation of China, National 973 program, 863 program, National Scientific and Technological Development Program, and National Key Special Program for High-Tech Industrialization of Industrial Automation, have been undertaken by this subject, whose funding has reached a level of 70 million RMB and among which more than 49 percent are of the state or province/ministry-level. As for the publications of the faculty members, more than 800 journal and conference papers have been published, among which over 400 papers have been cited by SCI and EI. Furthermore, 19 research monographs and textbooks have appeared. A total of 20 national invention patents have been submitted, among which 11 have been approved till the end of 2006, and 13 computer software authorization officially registered. This subject has also won the 2nd-class Prize for National Scientific and Technological Development (twice), an Excellence Prize for Chinese Patents, 21 research awards of province/ministry-level among which are 6 first-class, 4 2nd-class and 11 third-class awards and 3 teaching awards as well.
