Approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in March 2023, the State Key Laboratory of Coal Liquefaction, Gasification and Utilization with High-Efficiency, Low-Carbon Technologies was established through the restructuring of the State Key Laboratory of Coal Liquefaction and Chemical Engineering (affiliated to Shandong Energy Group), in partnership with East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST).
The Laboratory is the only research institution that possesses both coal-water slurry and pulverized coal gasification technologies with large-scale engineering applications in the world. It is also the only research institution in China with both high-temperature/low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis technologies for the industrial application of indirect coal liquefaction.

The Laboratory aims to:
Conduct internationally pioneering research;
Build a globally competitive research team;
Establish a premier platform.
It focuses on key research areas including clean and efficient large-scale coal gasification, high-efficiency low-carbon coal-based F-T synthesis, and high-value utilization of clean fuels and chemicals.
By addressing major scientific and technological challenges in the fields of coal liquefaction, gasification, clean energy and carbon-emission control, the Laboratory seeks to develop an integrated innovation system including fundamental research, pilot-scale testing, engineering demonstration and industrial application.
It aims to safeguard national energy security, support the sustainable and high-quality development of the modern coal chemical industry, and contribute to achieving “Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality” strategic goals.
The Laboratory employs 148 permanent staff, including 119 senior researchers. With over 75% employees under the age of 45, it forms a well-structured, high-caliber scientific team led by young and middle-career researchers.
The Laboratory has demonstrated the capability to undertake major national projects, having led and completed over 20 national initiatives such as the “863 Program”, “973 Program”, and National Key R&D Program in the fields of clean, efficient and low-carbon conversion of coal.

In the fields of coal gasification, coal liquefaction and high-value chemicals production, it has been awarded 2 National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class), 2 Special Prize for Ministerial/Provincial-Level Technology Invention, and 10 Ministerial/Provincial-Level Science and Technology Progress Prizes (First Class).
