State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering‍ was approved in 1987 and completed for operation in 1991. It is the first national-level key laboratory in China in Chemical Engineering. It is also a pioneer in China for conducting organized scientific research based on a collaborative university model in Chemical Engineering.

The Laboratory is positioned at the forefront of Chemical Engineering. Guided by the “Dual Carbon” goals (Carbon Peak & Carbon Neutrality) of China and the national strategy for Green, Low-carbon and High-quality Development, the Laboratory focuses on three key research directions: Microchemical Engineering Technology & Flow Chemistry, Intensification of Chemical Reaction & Separation Processes, and Low-Carbon & Intelligent Chemical Engineering Manufacturing Systems.

It conducts collaborative research to:

  • Uncover the principles of reaction and transport at micro/nano scales, along with the dynamic characteristics and regulatory mechanisms of processes;

  • Expand the disciplinary boundaries of chemical engineering;

  • Innovate and enrich chemical processes;

  • Strengthen the foundation of the discipline;

  • Enhance capabilities in addressing complex chemical engineering challenges;

  • Establish a globally leading hub of science and technology for the intensification of low-carbon chemical processes;

  • Serve as a strategic scientific and technological force of China in this field.

Building on 37 years of synergistic collaboration among Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, East China University of Science and Technology, and Zhejiang University, the Laboratory will further leverage their complementary academic strengths to:

  • Forge a world-class team for fundamental researches & technological innovation with global impact in chemical engineering;

  • Make breakthroughs in concepts, principles, and methodologies in the field of process intensification;

  • Develop original and disruptive technologies for industrial deployment;

  • Advance the disciplinary and industrial evolution with the help of advanced low-carbon chemical engineering theories and intensification technologies;

  • Accelerate China’s technological self-reliance in chemical science & technology and the achievement of “Dual Carbon” goals (Carbon Peak & Carbon Neutrality);

  • Make significant contributions to the high-quality development of the Chinese economy.

The Laboratory has 166 permanent staff members, including:

  • 14 Chief Scientists of National Key R&D Programs;

  • 2 Principal Investigators of Major Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC);

  • 25 National Distinguished Experts;

  • 30 National Young Talents;

  • 82 Young Researchers under age 40.
