The State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering (SKLBE) is one of the first national-level key laboratories of China. Founded in 1989 and authorized in 1995, SKLBE was formally opened to the public in 1996 with the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.
SKLBE successfully completed its restructuring in 2024, consolidating the university’s core research strengths in Bio-sensing, Industrial Software, and Intelligent Equipment Control. It aims to establish an integrated paradigm of strain development, process innovation, and bioreactor engineering for industrial-scale biomanufacturing.
Guided by the concept of “Integrating Scientific Principles with Engineering Applications for Agricultural and Medical Advancement”, SKLBE has gathered a high-level research team and established an academic platform with advanced facilities for innovative interdisciplinary research, such as structure-guided enzyme evolution, big data-mediated intelligent biomanufacturing, dynamic cellular metabolic detection, synthetic microbial cell factory, advanced biomaterials, marine microbial vaccines, etc.
SKLBE has achieved breakthroughs in bioreactor system innovation, multi-scale fermentation control strategies, and cellular metabolism regulation. These advances have revolutionized antibiotic production and other critical biomanufacturing processes.
Its accomplishments include 8 National Science and Technology Awards, 26 ministerial and provincial-level Grand Prizes/First Prizes, and foundational support for discipline construction: A+ in Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering & Technology according to the national discipline assessment. Having trained nearly 100 leading scientists and 10000+ industry professionals, it has profoundly shaped China’s bio-manufacturing sector.
