This book presents an ethnographic study of education and migration from the perspective of three groups of South Koreans in contemporary China: migrant parents, children/students, and educational agents. The book reveals how these temporary migrants make choices, plan their trajectories and interact with the authorities in both China and South Korea. The subjectivities of these migrant groups are shaped by and respond to the educational and migration policies of both the sending and receiving countries. As “people in between”, they occupy fluid and multiple positionalities that are transnationally distributed. Paradoxically, they experience a simultaneous sense of privilege, integration and separation, reflecting China’s approach to internationalization. The book adds weight to the argument that China is a temporary destination for foreigners rather than a place for long-term settlement.
