Focusing on verb-particle combinations, the book attempts to analyze L1-L2 differences in word combination patterns from a cognitive linguistic perspective, highlighting L1-induced difficulties in learners' word combinations through an analysis of their written production. It reports on an exploratory study that investigates Chinese-English differences in the representation of macro-events and their influence on Chinese EFL learners’ written production of verb-particle combinations (VPCs). Developmental patterns in learners’ production are also observed. Theoretically, the study built a framework for Chinese-English differences in the representation of macro-events and studied the influence of cross-linguistic differences on learners’ use of VPCs deductively. Practically, it described both learners’ uses of VPCs that are consistent with the NS (native speaker) norm and those that deviate from it, and identified developmental features of learners in the use of VPCs. Pedagogically, its findings offer significant implications for teaching practices and materials design.
