Since the late Qing Dynasty, Chinese society has undergone fundamental transformations—ranging from institutions and systems to everyday life, and from social structures to cultural traditions. This period presents a dynamic and intellectually gripping narrative for academic inquiry. The concept of the “New Woman” emerged as a novel social category during this period, representing a redefined female identity. Drawing on theories and methodologies from gender studies, historical sociology, journalism, communication studies, and advertising, this study examines the construction of the “New Woman” image in modern China. Through this analytical lens, the book also traces the intellectual and spiritual development of Chinese thinkers during the 1920s. In summary, this work presents a pioneering exploration into the imagery and metaphorical connotations of the “New Woman” in modern Chinese society, complemented by a comparative international perspective.
