ECUST Leveraged Special Research Zone to Boost Carbon Neutrality Science

In December 2022, with the support of the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, ECUST officially launched the Shanghai Carbon Neutrality Basic Research Special Zone.

After three years of dedicated development, the special zone has successfully accomplished its mid-term goals. It has become a core engine and a key testing ground for the university’s implementation of China’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality strategy, consolidating basic research and enhancing original innovation capacity.

Building on its strengths in chemical engineering, chemistry and advanced materials, the zone focuses on frontier directions including high-value low-carbon chemical processes, new energy storage, green hydrogen production and advanced energy materials.

It collaborates closely with the university’s Future Technology College of Carbon Neutrality and major hydrogen energy research platforms, forming a full innovation chain spanning basic research, technological breakthroughs, engineering demonstration and industrial application.

To bridge the gap between academia and industry, ECUST has jointly launched key research projects with leading enterprises including Baowu, Shenergy and CATL. It has achieved major breakthroughs in catalytic hydrogen production, electrolyzer equipment and green hydrogen production, facilitating the robust translation of research achievements from laboratories to industrial practice.

Furthermore, ECUST attaches great importance to nurturing young researchers. It has funded 20 forward-looking basic research projects with an average age of project leaders at only 34.

Many young scholars are exploring uncharted academic frontiers and tackling core technical problems. Their findings have been published in top international journals such as Science and Nature. Several young researchers have won Young Scientists Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and high-level talent honors, growing into a dynamic force for carbon neutrality basic research.

In the future, ECUST will continue to take the special zone as a key platform to advance original innovation in basic research, make greater contributions to China’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality strategy while promoting high-level sci-tech self-reliance and self-strengthening.
